Connie MacLeod has been a Teacher of the Visually Impaired for over 27 years and an Orientation and Mobility Specialist for 35 years. She has served children and adults with visual impairment and blindness and children with deaf/blindness from the ages of birth to 100.
Connie graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in special education in 1987. While attending the University of Florida, she spent three summers working at Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, Massachusetts in both the residential cottages and in the classroom. Guide runner and assistant goal ball coach with FABA (Florida Association for Blind Athletes).
While working in Charlotte, Connie started the North Carolina Association for Blind Athletes and NC membership into USABA (United States Association for Blind Athletes). She helped to establish goal ball clinics, training, and area competitions. She helped with training individuals by guide running and swimming. In 1996, Connie helped with coaching goal ball for a Para-Olympian during the Olympics in Atlanta.
In 1991, The Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind recruited Connie to provide orientation and mobility within the Waikato Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Not only did she work with the RNZFB but also with the Ministry of Education in Special Education Services with early intervention and helping to develop programs for visually impaired children within the schools. She remained in NZ until 1994 and moved to Massachusetts. In 1996, she started her contracting company throughout Western Massachusetts. Connie remained in Massachusetts until 2020 when she moved back to North Carolina. This is home for her. She has once again started her contracting business and is based in North Carolina.
